National Board Professional Teaching Standards Certification (NBPTSC) |

Application Grants
Awards/Stipends
HC*EXCELL created a partnership with the Hamblen County Board of Education in 2002 to provide an opportunity for two system teachers a year to apply for National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Certification. The first Hamblen County National Board recipient was Beth Freeman. The cost for National Board certification is $2500 and a great of self-evaluation and hard work.
National Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. A voluntary process established by National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, certification is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes between one and three years to complete and measures what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.
NBPTSC honors Hamblen County National Board teachers upon receipt of their certification with a check for $500 and a $200 stipend per year once certified. |

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVOCACY PROGRAMS (timeline) |
| |
In 2001 HC*EXCELL had an opportunity through its membership in the Public Education Network (PEN) to apply for a community education engagement grant to support the PBS Series “The History of American Public Education”. HC*EXCELL partnered with staff at WSCC, TN Technology Center and the Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce to develop a ten county education engagement initiative. The HC*EXCELL partnership was selected as one of thirteen applicants from across the nation to receive a grant for developing and implementing community engagement around education. All ten service area counties participated in the engagement overview. Jefferson and Hamblen completed 13 diversified engagements, presentations, publication and a review process, Cocke, Grainger, Hawkins, Greene, Hancock residents, workers or students were involved in 2-3 engagements each.
The Hamblen County engagement process culminated in the Building a Knowledge Community report.

Follow-up actions to the report included the development of the Hamblen County P-16 Council, education stakeholder meetings, Hamblen County P-16 Education Forum and the Economic Education Summit.
